Dressage At Devon

2003 marked another year of a huge and outstanding competition at Dressage At Devon, the largest breed show in North America. Breeders from all over the U.S.A. as well as riders from Canada and other countries descended upon Devon once again to compete for high honors among their peers.

L.A. Baltic Kharma

I did not count the number of SWB horses at Devon this year, but it was certainly more than ever before, although the numbers were still small compared to some other breeds.

In the open in-hand classes 2 SWB horses placed in the Top 10 and both were bred by Los Alamos Dressage Center.

L.A. Baltic Kharma
(L.A. Baltic Inspiration x L.A. Rose of Sweden) placed 8th in the 4 year old and older maiden mare class.

L.A. Baltic River Shadow

Patty Crawford with L.A. Baltic River Shadow
L.A. Baltic River Shadow (Riverman x L.A. Rose of Sweden) owned by Patty Crawford, placed 6th in the yearling filly class.

Both classes had more than 30 entrants.

Lisa Basselini is holding Kharma and Patty Crawford is holding River Shadow. Both horses were shown by Lisa Basselini
Los Alamos Dressage Center also placed 6th in the Breeder's Groups with
L.A. Baltic Kharma and L.A. Baltic River Shadow shown by Lisa Basselini, manager and assistant trainer at Los Alamos Dressage Center.

L.A. Baltic Black Pearl

L.A. Baltic Black Pearl

(L.A. Baltic Inspiration x Giselle), a yearling filly, was very tense in her open class and scored 73.5%, which was not high enough for a top 10 spot, but she settled down and showed well in the SWB class, winning it with an 80% under German judge, Peter Engle.

Results of the SWB class were:

L.A. Baltic Kharma then showed in the F.E.I. 6 year old Young Horse Championships and placed 2nd with Lisa Basselini riding. The winner was another SWB, Silver Label, by Rambo and ridden by Dr. Ceasar Parra.

This class was open to both imported and North American bred horses.

Here are the full results:

Congratulations to all!!

More 2003 Show Winners

Melissa Reese and the Artful Dodger

Melissa and her 6-year old Oldenburg gelding, The Artful Dodger, who train at Los Alamos with Lisa Basselini, had another successful show season this year! In July, Melissa and Dodger were on the winning Training Level 3 & 4 team at the USDF Region 1 Jr/YR Team Championship in Leesburg, VA.

They won their Dressage Seat Equitation class at that show. In August, Melissa and Dodger were Silver Medalists at First Level at the Northeast Jr/YR Championship in Darien, CT, winning the Dressage Seat Equitation portion of the competition. Melissa and Dodger were the Junior Training Level Reserve Champions at the BLM Championship, and were the Junior Training Level Champions at the ESDCTA Championship for the second year in a row. They completed the show season by finishing fifth in a class of 25 at the USDF Region 1 Championship in Lexington, VA on October 19th.

Melissa also earned her USDF Qualified Rider Award this year.

L.A. Baltic Odyssey

L.A. Baltic Odyssey (Show Name - Cody)
(Riverman x L.A. Utrilla by Utrillo)
Larry Poulin driving Cody (L.A. Baltic Odyssey) and the Holsteiner, Camden, all owned by Natasha Grigg, MA. competed for the USET in the 2003 World Championships in France.

Cody just won the Pair Horse Classic at the Fair Hill International show Oct. 23-26 where they won both marathon and cones and placed 2nd in dressage driving.

We are so proud and delighted with the job Larry Poulin has done with "Cody". They seem to make an outstanding match and we enjoy watching the progress. We also want to acknowledge and thank "Cody's" former owners, Janet Bell and Tom Benson, who bought him from Los Alamos Dressage Center as a youngster for dressage but recognized that he seemed to want to do something else with his life and were wise enough to make the match with Larry Poulin a reality.

L.A. Baltic Odyssey, (show name Cody) just 6 years old and in training with Larry Poulin for less than a year before qualifying for a spot on the USET Pairs Driving Team, showed his remarkable talent and heart in the 2003 World Championships.

"Cody" has always performed exceptionally well in the dressage driving phase and it was Larry's intention to use him for this part of the competition and then to team up his more experienced horses, Camden and Conyer for the maraton and cones.

However, fate dictated differently when Larry's main maraton horse did not travel well to Europe and was not ready to compete. Although very green to the sport, "Cody" was needed in all three phases of the competitive driving competition and poured his heart out to do his best.
The USET placed 8th overall.

Congratulations to all!!
